By 1866 Zeiss sold their 1,000 th microscope. By 1861 the Zeiss workshop was considered to be among the best scientific-instrument makers in Germany with about 20 people working in the company, and business growing quickly. By 1847 he was making microscopes full-time.

The current company emerged from a reunification of Carl Zeiss companies in East and West Germany with a consolidation phase in the 1990s.
